Storm sweep Dominican to close out weekend

GRINNELL, Iowa -- On the final day of the Central/Grinnell Invitational, the Simpson College volleyball squad went home early by executing a 3-0 sweep of Dominican on Saturday.

The Storm (2-2) earned back-to-back two-point victories in the first and second sets, 28-26, 25-23, before dominating the final frame in 25-10 fashion.

Both teams were tied at 24-all in the first set, before points for each squad pushed the score to 25. With the Stars (1-4) sitting at set point of 26-25, the Storm scored three straight points with the help of two errors from Dominican and an ace from junior Jessica Jacobs.

Simpson built a six-point advantage in the second set at 19-13, before the Stars went on a 9-3 burst to knot the set at 22. The freshman duo of Aaliyah Johnson and Courtney Paxton tallied back-to-back kills to provide a buffer and the set ended with a Dominican service error.

The offense started quickly in the third set by grabbing an 8-0 lead with four kills during that span. The lead was pushed to 12 during the final set before Jacobs closed the match with another ace.

The Storm ended with 32 kills, nine by Jacobs and seven from Paxton. Junior Marissa Salber had 15 assists. Simpson captured its best hitting percentage of the season of .247.
