DUBUQUE, Iowa - Dubuque scored two goals in the first half en-route to a 3-0 win over the Simpson women's soccer team in the first round of the Iowa Conference Tournament on Saturday.
Goals by Kelsey Graefen and Alexandra Watkins gave the third-seeded Spartans (15-4) a 2-0 lead at the break. Dubuque advances to the semifinal round to face second-seeded Luther on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
After being outshot 18-2 in the first half, Simpson came back with an improved attack.
"Today was tough," head coach Ryan Sander said. "We had a hard time connecting early in the game. We switched up some things in the second half and generated more opportunities, unfortunately we couldn't get the one thing we needed: goals."
Stephanie Cox had nine saves for the Storm (4-16-1), who saw their season come to a close. Cox closed the season with a school-record 148 saves.
