Cox sets record as women's soccer falls to Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Stephanie Cox set the school record for saves in a season but Patty Murphy-Geiss scored the lone goal of the game as Grinnell snuck past the Simpson women's soccer team 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Murphy-Geiss found the back of the net in the 31st minute for the Pioneers (10-5-1), who are in third place in the Midwest Conference.

Cox had four saves on the day to increase her season total to 120, surpassing Whitney Franker's record of 116 set in 2006. A sophomore, Cox is in her first year between the posts for the Storm after playing in the field as a freshman in 2012.

Simpson's leading goal-scorer and Grinnell-native, Amber Johnson, took a game-high four shots, putting two on frame. The Storm (4-13-1) swung the momentum in the second half, outshooting Grinnell 4-1 after getting outshot 8-3 in the first half.

Simpson returns to Iowa Conference play this weekend when the Storm travel to Waverly to take on Wartburg on Saturday, Oct. 26. The Knights (6-9-1, 3-2 Iowa Conference) lost to Dubuque 2-1 on Saturday.
