Women's soccer shuts out Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Rachel Muse and Amber Johnson each scored a goal and the Simpson women's soccer team beat Coe 2-0 on Saturday.

Stephanie Cox made five saves in the shutout as the Storm (4-12-1, 2-2-1 Iowa Conference) picked up three crucial points in the league standings. With just one league game remaining, Simpson has seven points and is in great shape to earn a spot in the conference tournament.

"We had a great week of practice leading up to today and we rode that momentum," head coach Ryan Sander said. "We are starting to play a brand of soccer that will give us the results we want."

Muse put Simpson on the board when she lofted a shot over Coe goalkeeper Kaylee Weems into the upper 90 from 15 yards out in the 40th minute. Johnson added an insurance goal in the 48th minute when she got past a charging Weems and took advantage of the open net.

Decimated by injuries early in the season, there were a few more available bodies on the sidelines on Saturday.

"This is the healthiest we have been since Aug. 30," Sander said. "We were able to keep people fresh and that will only help us as we near the end of the regular season."

Brenna Winn took four shots and put two on goal for the Kohawks (3-11-1, 0-5), who were only outshot 13-11 on the day. Weems made seven saves between the posts.

Simpson goes to Grinnell for a non-conference match against the Pioneers on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
