INDIANOLA, Iowa – Ashlee Krider scored the only goal of the game, the defense turned in a clean sheet and the Simpson women's soccer team beat Bethel 1-0 on Sunday at Buxton Stadium.
In the 38th minute, Krider took a great pass from Amber Johnson inside the box and ripped a shot past Bethel keeper Callie Roseland for the game's lone goal.
The defense held from there as the Storm (1-1) recovered from a disappointing loss the day before, when Carleton scored three goals in a span of three minutes to down Simpson 3-2.
"We connected passes a lot better and maintained possession much better today," third-year head coach Ryan Sander said. "Defensively we played a lot better and stayed a lot tighter in the middle."
Trailing 1-0, the Royals (0-2) turned up the heat in the second half. Bethel outshot Simpson 10-4 and took five corner kicks to zero for the Storm.
Bethel outshot Simpson 17-9 on the day, but Megan Petersen made eight saves – including a few game-savers – to protect the lead.
"Megan played one of the best games I've ever seen her play," Sander said. "Defensively we forced them to take a lot of shots from outside the 18, and I'm okay with that. Everyone helped out and saved us a few times. It was an all-around defensive effort."
The Storm have a few days off before hosting Grinnell on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers are 0-0-1 on the year after tying 0-0 with Coe on Saturday.
