Late goals doom Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Visiting Carleton spoiled the Simpson women's soccer team's season-opener with three goals in a three-minute span en-route to a 3-2 win Saturday.

Simpson led 2-1 late in the game before the Knights (1-0) scored two goals in 19 seconds, the first of which came 1 minute 27 seconds after they got on the board for the first time.

"We worked so hard to get our goals and to give them up that quickly was disappointing," third-year head coach Ryan Sander said. "But at the same time we have a lot of new pieces on the field. We worked very hard and made some runs early on, and in the end I think we were spent."

Simpson's lead came courtesy of Heather Adolph, who made a pair of highlight-reel goals.

Her first came in the 53rd minute. With possession of the ball 40 yards out on the right wing, she noticed the keeper creeping towards her and sent a rocket over her head and into the top 90.

The second goal was a replay of the first, this one coming from 25 yards out at 81:08 after Kara Lovik set her up off a set piece.

"Both of Heather's goals were great soccer plays," Sander said. "On the first, she looked up and saw the keeper was out and chipped it over her head. It was a very heads up play. On the second, she just let it rip because she knew she got the first one."

The celebration was short lived, as Claire MGillem snuck a low ball past keeper Megan Petersen less than a minute later, tying the game.

Ellie Wilson scored the game-winner after at 82:22 (19 seconds later) after a fortuitous Carleton bounce off an official left the Simpson defense out of position.

"A lot of things went on," Sander said. "We had two leads late in the game and it was frustrating that it happened the way it did."

Simpson doesn't have to wait long for its next chance at a win as the Storm host Bethel on Sunday at 2 p.m.
