Storm upended by Rams in season debut

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Simpson College men's wrestling team was upended 52-0 by Cornell in its 2023-24 season debut tonight.

The Rams (1-0) scored bonus points in eight of the 10 bouts, including four consecutive pins between 165 and 197 pounds. Cornell's other bonus-point victories came via technical falls at 133, 149 and 157 and a major decision at 141.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Kanin Hable wrestled a close match for the Storm (0-1) to start the night, but ultimately fell 7-3. The sophomore tied the match at 3-3 with a penalty point and reversal in the third period, but Jase Van Pelt secured a takedown and riding time point to win by four.
• Trey Kellow led 3-1 after the first three minutes and was tied with Scotty Scheidecker 4-4 going into the final period. Scheidecker earned a reversal to go ahead 6-4, but Kellow continued to battle and pulled within one on a penalty point. With less than 30 seconds left, Scheidecker caught Kellow in a near side cradle for the victory.

UP NEXT
Simpson hosts the Luther Hill Invitational on Saturday alongside the women's wrestling team, which is going into its second year of competition. The meet will take place inside the Blake Fieldhouse at Indianola Middle School, beginning at 9 a.m.
