Men's Soccer tops Dubuque, advances to IIAC Semifinals

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Mitchell White and Tyler Neumann converted penalty kicks as Simpson beat Dubuque, 2-1 in the first round of the Iowa Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday.

With the win, the No. 4 seed Storm (12-6-2) advance to play No. 1 seed Loras in the semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The two teams played in the last game of the regular season on Tuesday, a 3-0 Simpson win.

"We just played them a few days ago so both teams clearly knew what to expect from the other," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "It was going to come down to execution."

White drew a foul in the box in the 34th minute and converted the penalty kick for his 14th goal of the season. Neumann did the same in the 77th minute for the insurance goal.

"It was an awkward way to win a match, but when you put a team under enough pressure they are going to be prone to committing fouls in and around the box," Isaacson said.

Daniel Morris scored the lone goal of the game for the No. 5 seed Spartans (6-11-1).

Luke Aronow made a pair of saves in goal to improve to 10-2-2 on the year.

Simpson and Loras last met on Oct. 1, a 3-1 Duhawk win. Isaacson thinks his team has a chance if they can keep the score close in the latter moments.

"We want it to be a tight match in the 80th and 90th minute," he said. "We want to give ourselves a chance to win in the last 10 minutes of the game."

Game time is yet to be determined.
