Clutch goal keeps Simpson undefeated in 1-1 tie

LINCOLN, Neb. – A late goal by Cody Jacobson helped the Simpson men's soccer team salvage a 1-1 tie against Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday night.

Despite outshooting Nebraska Wesleyan 22-14 on the night, the Storm (3-0-1) found their undefeated record in jeopardy after allowing a goal in the final seconds of the first half.

Colby Twist scored the lone goal for the Prairie Wolves (2-1-1), taking advantage of a breakaway at the 44:29 mark. Twist's goal is the first allowed by the Simpson defense this season.

In need of an equalizer, Simpson finally got one in the 84th minute when Marcus Varnum served up a cross to Jacobson, who headed it into the back of the net.

Neither team scored in extra time, where Wesleyan outshot Simpson 5-4.

A tightly officiated contest, the two teams combined for 39 fouls and five yellow cards. Nebraska Wesleyan committed 25 fouls to Simpson's 14 and Simpson was cited for three yellows.

Simpson will go for its fourth win of the season when it hosts Fontbonne on Friday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.
