Lahart, Neumann head men's soccer all-conference picks

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Simpson's Mark Lahart and Tyler Neumann earned second team honors while Luke Aronow, Jeremy Reinert and Marcus Varnum landed honorable mention nods to the 2012 All-Iowa Conference Men's Soccer Team, as announced by the league office late last week.

A senior midfielder from Newton, Iowa, Lahart's second team honor is the first of his career after experiencing his best season for the Storm in 2012. He scored a career-high seven goals on the year and tied for the team lead with nine assists. He scored one game-winner and closed his career with 17 assists, tied for fifth in school history.

A freshman forward from Johnston, Iowa, Neumann landed second team honors after leading the team with 33 points and 12 goals on the year. He tied Lahart for the team lead with nine assists and connected on three game-winners during the season. He earned Iowa Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors twice.

A junior goalkeeper from Ankeny, Iowa, Aronow earned honorable mention honors for the second time in his career, adding to his selection in 2011. Aronow went 12-8-1 between the posts and made 85 saves, second most in the conference. He owned a 1.85 goals against average and had four shutouts individually, helping Simpson to eight as a team.

A senior midfielder from Indianola, Iowa, Reinert earned honorable mention honors after scoring five goals during the season. Reinert was a second team all-conference pick in 2011, but switched from forward to a holding-mid position that saw his attacking responsibilities shrink in 2012.

A freshman midfielder from Ankeny, Iowa, Varnum tied for third on the team with seven goals, adding four assists. Three of his goals came against conference competition, as he led the team with seven points in league-play. He had three game-winners during the season.

In 2012 the Storm experienced their first winning season since 2002 under second-year head coach Rick Isaacson, going 13-8-1 overall and tying for fourth in the Iowa Conference with a 3-3-1 mark. Simpson's 13 wins were the most since that 2002 squad won 15 games.
