All smiles as Storm post 11 goals

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Goals came in bunches for the Simpson men's soccer team on Saturday in an 11-0 win over Crown College at Buxton Stadium.

Everyone got involved for the Storm (1-0), who scored the most goals by a Simpson team since 2004 in front of an exuberant home crowd.

"Today was a good start," second-year head coach Rick Isaacson said. "I am pleased with the way we played and that we got a chance to evaluate a lot of guys in a game situation. I hope we can build on this momentum into tomorrow's match (against Bethel)."

Isaacson had a small army at his disposal as 30 players made it onto the pitch. The nucleus was a mix of newcomers and veterans, and balance was the theme.

"I thought we played with good balance and got contributions from several different people," Isaacson said. "We had a nice mix of young and old on the field getting a chance to gel early in the season."

The young guys did more than their part, as freshmen accounted for seven goals and two of Simpson's six assists. Tyler Neumann led the way with two goals and an assist, Cody Jacobson scored twice and was inches away from a hat trick, Marcus Varnum had a goal and an assist, and Connor Nightingale and Garryson Ridgely each had a goal.

"It was great for the newcomers to get their first game out of the way and get over the jitters," Isaacson said. "We knew they'd be a solid group but weren't sure how they'd gel with the older guys. Everything looked fine today."

Mark Lahart didn't break into the scoring column but tallied three assists, tying his total from 2011 and coming within one of tying a school record.

Mike Flanagan got Simpson on the board just over five minutes into the contest, finding the back of the net off a corner kick from Lahart. Newmann scored goals in the 7th and 17th minutes and Mitchell White – last year's leading goal scorer – got involved with a score in the 21st. Jacobson's first goal came in the 40th minute and gave Simpson a 5-0 lead at the half.

A second team all-conference performer a year ago, Jeremy Reinert got in the book with a goal 17 seconds into the second period. From there, it was all freshmen as Jacobson scored his second goal and Varnum, Ridgely and Nightingale connected on their goals.

Simpson hits the pitch again Sunday with a 4 p.m. start against Bethel.
