Newton lands academic all-district selection

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson men's soccer player Brian Newton earned a spot on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District® First Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, as announced on Thursday.

A senior defender form Newton, Iowa, Newton owns a cumulative GPA of 3.84 while triple-majoring in math, economics and finance. He started three of the 18 games in which he appeared this season and has one career goal. He is a two-time academic all-conference pick, a four-time Dean's List honoree, a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society, the Eminent Treasurer for the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and a member of the Simpson Math Club.

Newton is one of three Iowa Conference representatives to make the 13-person team, joined by Dubuque's Peter Hager and Coe's Reid Galbraith.

As a first-team honoree, Newton advances to the Capital One Academic All‐America® Team ballot, where first‐, second‐ and third‐team All‐America honorees will be selected later this month.

Newton and the Storm enjoyed the program's best season in 10 years, going 13-8-1 in 2012 for the most wins since 2002. Simpson advanced to the semifinals of the Iowa Conference Tournament, losing to top-seeded Loras to end the season.
