Men's golf bounces back in second round, places fourth at D-III Midwest Region Classic

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – Paced by another solid outing from Trent Lindenman, the Simpson men's golf team jumped six spots over the final 18 holes to finish fourth at the 2014 NCAA Division III Midwest Region Classic.

Playing the Arbor and Lake Courses at Trappers Turn Golf Club (6,630 yards), Simpson was able to shave 28 strokes a team from Monday to Tuesday. The Storm were tied for 10th after an opening round 323, but moved all the way to fourth after Tuesday's 295.

The 28-team field featured Division III teams from around the region. Central won the tournament (301-283-584), followed by Carthage (310-292-602), Millikin (305-309-614), Simpson (323-295-618) and Edgewood (320-301-621).

"I'm extremely proud of these young men because we've been working our tails off for this event," head coach Jason Marvelli said. "They could have just laid down and chalked it up to bad weather and multiple delays in round one. However, they regrouped, came out on day two and showed the kind of team we are."

The Storm's climb up the leaderboard mirrored Lindenman's, who shot a pedestrian 7-over 79 on Monday. He bounced back on Tuesday, though, firing a 2-under 70 to tie for fifth in the 136-player field.

"Trent continues to mature into one of the top players not only in the Iowa Conference but in the region," Marvelli said. "His dedication to our program is showing in his accomplishments."

Lindenman's 70 was the second-lowest score turned in at the tournament, trailing only Clay Curwin's (Central) 68 on Tuesday. The junior finished in the top five for the fourth time in five tournaments this fall and now owns a 72.1 average in eight rounds.

The duo of Nathan Molstead and Andy Hutchins each shot 155 for the weekend to tie for 25th overall. Molstead shot 83 on Monday but came back with a career-low 72 on Tuesday. Hutchins came out of the gates with a 79 before closing the tournament with a 76.

Mitch Tomlonovic (82-78-160, t-52nd) and Jimmy Siebert (85-77-162, t-60th) rounded out Simpson's lineup.
