Storm offense racks up 450 yards in A-R-C opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Simpson College football had its best offensive outing of the year on Saturday in the American Rivers Conference opener after racking up 450 yards on offense, but Coe held firm to win 42-22.

Junior Brett Bobinet came in off the bench to toss for 309 yards and three scores for a career best. Senior Joe McNally was his top target with 163 receiving yards on eight receptions, while junior Reed Worth corralled seven balls for 126 yards, both were career-highs for the duo.

Both teams played a scoreless opening quarter before erupting for 30 points in the second frame.

The Kohawks (3-0, 1-0 A-R-C) scored on a 1-yard run before the Storm (0-3, 0-1 A-R-C) collected a touchdown on their ensuing drive. Bobinet found Worth for a 14-yard TD to bring the game to 7-6.

Coe extended its lead to 14-6 on another running play. Senior Parker Hansen trimmed the deficit to 14-9 with a 22-yard field goal.

The hosts pushed the game to 35-9 after ending the half with a score and twice more in the third quarter. Simpson regained the momentum in the fourth by scoring twice. Bobinet scrambled to the right after avoiding a sack and found Worth in the endzone for a 37-yard score and later found McNally on a 13-yard pass and catch with 52 seconds left.

The Kohawks tallied 544 yards of total offense with 288 coming on the ground and 256 through the air. Reigning A-R-C Offensive Player of the Week, Alphonso Soko, had 134 rushing yards and three TDs.

Junior Wyatt Schaben had a game-high 11 tackles and senior Lanny Herzog was the other lone tackler to have double-digit takedowns with 10.
