Simpson visits Coe to begin A-R-C play

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- American Rivers Conference play begins this weekend as Simpson travels to Coe for a 1 p.m. start time on Saturday.

The Storm (0-2) head into the road contest after suffering a 34-7 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point last weekend. The Kohawks (2-0) collected a 28-21 triumph over Hope College in the first ever meeting of the two programs.

FIRST AND 10
American Rivers Conference play begins this weekend for Simpson and Coe ... the Storm are coming off a 34-7 defeat to Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the first ever meeting between the teams last weekend and Coe won 28-21 over Hope College ... the Storm tallied its lone score on a 27-yard pass from senior Seth Howard to classmate Austin Bell near the front left pylon.

COE SERIES NOTES
The Storm and Kohawks square up for the 45th time in the series after the 2020-21 matchup was cancelled due to COVID-19 ... Simpson has won two of the last three meetings after the teams split the prior four outings ... Coe earned a 10-7 victory in the previous contest on Oct. 26, 2019 on its home turf after collecting a 26-yard field goal with under three minutes left ... the Storm rallied back with a touchdown with 95 seconds left and had the ensuing drive stall on its own 49-yard line after recovering the on-side kick. 

ABOUT THE KOHAWKS
Coe is one of three teams in the A-R-C without a blemish coming into week three ... the Kohawks have victories over Cornell College (38-7) and Hope College (28-21) ... last week, the offense racked up 292 yards rushing which led to Alphonso Soko being named the A-R-C Offensive Player of the Week with 284 yards and one score on the ground ... the University of Northern Iowa transfer paces the league with 177.5 rushing yards per contest.

A-R-C OPENER
Simpson has won two straight A-R-C openers dating back to 2018 ... the Storm won 27-21 against Nebraska Wesleyan in 2018 and 21-14 at Dubuque in 2019 ... Simpson last won at least two league openers from 2010-12 after the squad won three in row against Loras, twice, and Wartburg.

AROUND THE LEAGUE
The A-R-C will have four games on the slate for Saturday, all set for a 1 p.m. kickoff ... aside from Simpson and Coe meeting, Dubuque visits Luther, Buena Vista is at Loras and Nebraska Wesleyan takes on Central ... the Duhawks and Norse are also vying for their first victory of the season.

TACKLING DUO
The tandem of seniors Boston Draper and Lanny Herzog are tied for first in the league with 20 tackles ... both have 11 assists and nine solos from their secondary slots ... Draper had a league-best 15 takedowns in last weekend's contest and Herzog recorded 13 in the season opener.

ACKERSON THE LEG
Junior Mason Ackerson is second in the league rankings with a 39.4 yards per punt average and is second with a long of 55 yards ... he's booted two punts over 50 yards and landed one ball within the 20-yard line.

NEW OPPONENTS
The Storm began the season with two contests against new opponents in No. 1 Mary Hardin-Baylor and Wisconsin-Stevens Point ... this was the first time since 2017 Simpson has competed against a program from Wisconsin and the first ever against a team from Texas.

UP NEXT
Simpson takes on Central next Saturday for the 99th meeting in the series. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Buxton Stadium.
