Simpson hosts UW-Stevens Point for home opener

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The home opener is finally here for Simpson College football with Wisconsin-Stevens Point making their first appearance inside Buxton Stadium on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The Storm (0-1) dropped an 84-6 contest at No. 1 Mary Hardin-Baylor last week, while the Pointers (1-0) won 31-14 at NAIA Mayville State.

Simpson returns home for the first game inside Buxton Stadium since Nov. 16, 2019 ... the Storm started their season at No. 1 Mary Hardin-Baylor last week and fell 84-6 to the Crusaders ... UW-Stevens Point recorded a 31-14 victory against NAIA Mayville State University.

Tomorrow's contest will serve as the series opener for the out-of-state foes ... against the Wisconsin school system, Simpson supports a 5-7 record, including a perfect 4-0 mark against UW-River Falls ... the Storm last played against UW-Stout on Sept. 2, 2017.

ABOUT THE POINTERS
UW-Stevens Point and fourth-year head coach Greg Breitbach come into the game with a 1-0 mark after earning a 31-14 victory over NAIA Mayville State University in the season opener ... last weekend's triumph was the first season-opening win for the program since 2017 ... the Pointers ended with 411 yards off offense and held their counterpart to 235 yards ... quarterback Max Herro threw for 284 yards and three TDs.

HITTIN' HERZOG
With a career-high 13 tackles in the season opener, senior Lanny Herzog paces the American Rivers Conference in takedowns ... his seven solo tackles tie for second and his six assists are tops in the league.

RETURN SPECIALIST
Junior Desmond Alexander stayed busy last week as the team's primary return specialist ... he recorded five kickoff returns to average 21.2 yards per attempt ... his long of 33 yards is currently third in the A-R-C.

PUNTING PROWESS
Junior Mason Ackerson tallied five punts with an average of 42.8 yards per boot against the Crusaders ... his long of 55 yards paces the A-R-C and his average is second highest.

UP NEXT
A-R-C play begins next weekend with a trip to Coe (0-1) on Sept. 18. The contest will begin at 1 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
