Wolfensperger joins wrestling coaching staff

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Head coach Dylan Peters has announced the addition of Gunnar Wolfensperger to the Simpson wrestling staff as an assistant coach as the 2019 season is set to begin.

"Gunnar is one of the hardest working individuals I know," said Peters. "He isn't afraid of a challenge, and his experiences on and off the mat have made him no stranger to adversity. His time spent post-collegiately at Denver not only as a wrestling coach, but a strength and conditioning coach, will benefit the Simpson wrestling program."

Wolfensperger arrives to Indianola after assisting the Denver High School wrestling team and working as a strength and conditioning coach for the school. While working with the Cyclones, Wolfensperger launched the first girls wrestling team in school history. Along with the success of starting the girls team, he helped coach numerous state placers from both the girls and boys teams during his time in Denver.

While in college, Wolfensperger attended the University of Northern Iowa and wrestled for the Panthers for three seasons. He earned a 24-18 career mark and went .500 at 4-4 in Mid-American Conference duals. Wolfensperger graduated with a degree in exercise science from UNI.

During high school, Wolfensperger was a state champion for Denver and was part of a team that won two state titles and placed second on another occasion.

The Storm open the season on Thursday, Nov. 7 with a home dual against Cornell. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. inside Hopper Gymnasium.
