Storm bounce back to defeat Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Simpson College men's tennis team bounced back to defeat Dubuque in conference play, 6-3, Saturday, to snap its four-match skid.

The Storm (4-11, 2-4 A-R-C) earned a big conference win, coming from behind after the Spartans (2-13, 0-6 A-R-C) won the doubles point to begin the match.

Caleb Vasconez and Aaron Price won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, but the Spartans responded with relatively comfortable margins of victory at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to take a 2-1 lead into singles.

While the Storm have performed better overall at doubles throughout the season, that trend reversed in singles, as Simpson won five of six singles matches to come back and defeat the Spartans.

Ethan Humble knotted the match up at two a piece, with a double bagel over his opponent, winning 6-0 in both sets at the No. 4 spot. However, Dubuque answered at the No. 1 spot to retake the lead, but that would be the last point the Spartans earned. Love also won in straight sets to tie the match once again at the No. 6 spot.

The final three matches went three sets, starting with Javier Robles Solis giving the Storm its first lead of the day, with a 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 singles position. Price then clinched the match for Simpson, coming back from a 6-3 defeat in the first set to win the remaining two sets 6-4 and 6-2/ Drake Downard also won his rubber match at No. 5 singles, playing his 3rd set as a super tiebreak, which he won, 10-5.
