Storm take down Beavers for conference-opening win

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Simpson College men's tennis team defeated Buena Vista to open American Rivers Conference play by a score of 7-2, Wednesday, at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

The Storm (3-7, 1-0 A-R-C) have now defeated the Beavers (0-2, 0-1 A-R-C) for the third time in the last four meetings. Simpson got the benefit of winning at No. 3 doubles via default to open the match, meaning the Storm needed just one win at the No. 1 or No. 2 spots to take a lead into the singles portion of the match.

Drake Downard, who had won six matches in a row at No. 3 doubles, moved up to No. 2 doubles, teaming with Grant Love. The duo won the match by a score of 8-2, giving the Storm a 2-0 lead. However, the Beavers responded with a win at No. 1 doubles to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Storm regained its lead early on in singles, with Chase Henry double-bageling his opponent in straight sets at No. 5 singles to give the Storm a 3-1 advantage. Javier Robles Solis claimed his third dual match singles win of the year with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. Ethan Humble clinched the match for the Storm at No. 4 singles, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over his opponent.

For good measure, Aaron Price won his match at No. 3 singles, also in straight sets, as the Storm won 7-2, winning five of the six singles matches.

The Storm are in for a busy weekend, hosting Midland tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., and then staying at home to face off with Luther in A-R-C play on Saturday at 9 a.m.
