Storm take down Warriors for road victory
JACKSON, Wis. - The Simpson College men's tennis team earned its second dual match victory of the year with a 6-3 win over Wisconsin Lutheran on Friday.
The Storm (2-6) found success in doubles last weekend in Minnesota and continued that positive momentum into this match. After the Warriors (3-8) won the opening point at No. 1 doubles, the Storm responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles. The team of Caleb Vasconez and Aaron Price won their match at the No. 2 spot by a score of 8-4, with the duo now 3-3 at the No. 2 doubles position this year. Drake Downard and Ethan Humble continue to be red hot at the No. 3 spot, winning the deciding doubles match, 8-2. Downard and Humble have now won four straight doubles matches.
The Warriors took the lead in the match, 3-2, after picking up a pair of wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, but the Storm responded. Downard knotted the match back up at three with a straight set win at No. 6 singles, including bageling his opponent in the first set. The Storm retook the lead for good after Grant Love won his match at No. 5 singles.
With the score at 4-3, the Storm needed just to win one of the remaining two matches at No. 2 or No. 3 singles. At the No. 3 spot, Aaron Price won the first set 6-3, before clinching the win in a second-set tiebreak. Javier Robles Solis also won his match at the No. 2 position, rebounding from a loss in the first set to take the second set, 6-2, before his opponent retired with Robles Solis already leading in the tiebreak.
Up Next
The Storm will head back on the road to take on St. Ambrose next Thursday. The two programs were scheduled to meet in the fall, but the match was postponed.
