Swimming opens season in Kansas

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - Both of the Simpson College swimming and diving teams opened their season at the Spire Relays on Saturday.

Simpson competed alongside the host University of St. Mary's and fellow conference foe Nebraska Wesleyan on both sides. The Storm women collected 54 total points, while the men earned 22 points. The women took fourth overall, while the men finished in third behind the Spires and the Prairie Wolves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The women's short relay teams paced the Storm all day. The team of Payten Coates, Katie Oosterhuis, Breana Hinson, and Kate Minette won the 100 yard freestyle relay in a blistering time of 50.16.
  • Keelin Curley joined Coates, Oosterhuis, and Minette to place second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.84. Minette had the second-fastest overall split of all teams as well.
  • The women also placed third in the 100 yard medley relay with a time of 59.54, with Maude Steinbeck alongside Coates, Oosterhuis, and Minette.
  • Oosterhuis, Steinbeck, and Katelyn Smith placed third in the rare 3x100 yard breaststroke relay in a time of 4:17.33.
  • In the 500 yard crescendo relay, Laura Anthofer, Coates, Hinson, and Steinbeck placed third in a time of 5:28.11.
  • The men's team of Nathan Parkins, Gabe Bruns, Jay Ceperley, and Christopher Olds took fourth in the same event, clocking a 4:52.39.

UP NEXT
The Storm will host its first meet next weekend, welcoming in conference opponents Luther and Nebraska Wesleyan to Indianola.
