DUBUQUE, Iowa - After earning its first bid to the conference semifinals for the first time since 2005, the fifth-seed Simpson men's soccer team ran into top seed and regular season conference champion, Loras, which advanced with a 6-0 win Friday evening at the Rock Bowl.
The Storm (6-9-4) upset No. 4 Luther in penalty kicks to earn a bid in the semifinal round, but couldn't slow down the Duhawks, who entered the match ranked third in Division III.
Loras (18-1-1) took control of the match early, scoring two goals in the first half and adding three goals in a three-minute span midway through the second half.
Goals by Santiago Mejia (7') and Miguel Bonilla (18') provided the early spark for the Duhawks, who out-shot the Storm 13-2 in the first half. Loras kept the pressure on in the second half as Mejia (60'), Nick Rizzo (61'), and Camillo Garces (63') pushed goals across in quick succession. Chris Comstock capped the scoring with a goal in the 83rd minute.
