Hope slips past Simpson in both games on Tuesday

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Simpson College baseball team dropped both sides of its Tuesday doubleheader against Hope, falling 6-5 in the opener and 13-10 in the second game.

The Flying Dutchmen (3-7) managed to slip past the Storm (6-5) late in both games. Simpson led 5-2 in the first contest before Hope scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings for the walk-off victory. The Flying Dutchmen then broke a 10-10 tie in extra innings to swipe the nightcap as well.

Kasey Carter was 6-for-7 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored, while Ian Baldwin was 4-for-8 with a triple, a home run and three runs scored. 

GAME ONE BREAKDOWN

  • Simpson scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 4-2 lead over the Flying Dutchmen. Kasey Carter drove in two runs, while Dalton Ferrin and Will Carlock each tallied an RBI.
  • A run-scoring single by Ian Baldwin gave the Storm a 5-2 advantage in the top of the sixth, but Hope kept fighting and closed the gap to one with two runs on two hits in the home half.
  • Simpson was unable to add any insurance in the seventh and the Flying Dutchmen completed the comeback win by scoring on a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch.

GAME TWO BREAKDOWN

  • At least one run was scored in all but the second inning as the game featured four ties and five lead changes.
  • The Storm once again dented the scoreboard first as Will Carlock doubled and Nate Cagley singled to lift Simpson to an early 3-0 lead in the first.
  • Hope put up six runs in the third despite managing just one hit in the frame.
  • Simpson responded with two runs on two hits in the fourth, and took the lead back with three runs in the fifth. Ian Baldwin hit his second home run of the year to highlight the inning.
  • Carlock drove home another run in the sixth to make the score 9-7, but Hope began another rally and went ahead 10-9 with a couple of run-scoring singles in the top half of the seventh.
  • Simpson managed to keep the game alive with a run in the bottom half, but gave up three more runs in the eighth before going down in order to end the game.

Simpson has Wednesday off and will return to action Thursday afternoon against Illinois Wesleyan.
