Wrestling trio grab wins in season opener

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Dylan Peters era officially began Thursday night as the Simpson wrestling team competed against Cornell inside Hopper Gymnasium, but fell 29-12 to the Rams on opening night.

Cornell competed in its second match of the season and is now 1-1, while Simpson moves to 0-1 on the young season.

Dylan McChesney opened his sophomore season with a first-period pin at 125 pounds to give the Storm a quick 6-0 tilt. McChesney now has eight career falls and 15 career victories.

The Rams took the next three bouts to take a 12-6 advantage heading into the 157-pound match before Robert Silva grabbed a win for the Storm. Silva was down 4-3 heading into the final period but was able to get four points to win 7-4 in his first career contest for Simpson.

Colton Kinnison grabbed a close 2-1 victory in the 285-pound match after securing his second point in the last period to post the triumph.

Sam Mathis fought hard in the 197-pound class but fell 3-2 to start off his senior campaign. Sam McCoy lost at 141 pounds by a score of 7-6 while Josh Bower was upended 5-3 at 133 pounds as the freshmen began their careers for the Storm.

Comments from Coach Peters
"Our team showed a lot of potential moving forward. Dylan McChesney got us off to a great a start. Freshmen Robert Silva wrestled a smart match to keep us in the dual meet. We were able to end on a good note with Colton Kinnison grinding out a hard-fought 2-1 win at heavyweight. We don't have to wait long for an opportunity to improve. I'm excited about the future of this team."
