Robinson leads Storm with second-place finish at Doane

CRETE, Neb. — Noah Robinson took second place at 184 pounds to lead three placewinners for the Simpson wrestling team at the Doane University Open on Saturday, Dec. 9. No team scores were kept.

In addition to Robinson's runner-up effort, DeVaughn Scott took third at 197 pounds and RJ Brown came in fifth at 165. Although he didn't place, Alek Ziegler had a nice day with four wins in the 133-pound bracket.

Robinson places second at 184
Robinson began his day with a bye, then earned three straight decisions to advance to the championship. He beat Alex Kerr (Nebraska Wesleyan) 2-0, Justin Shaw (Doane) 6-2 and Ethan Leighton (Grand View) 8-6 in sudden victory. He lost to Zach Linton (Doane) 5-0 in the championship.

Scott places third at 197
Scott picked up a pair of pins en-route to a 3-1 day at 197. He opened the day with a 6-5 win over Ben Lodema (Nebraska Wesleyan) before pinning Gage Orton (Iowa Western CC) in 1:52. He lost to Evan Hansen (Grand View) 9-0 in the semifinal, then earned a second-period pin over Adam Ball (Midland) in the consolation semis. He won by medical forfeit to take third.

Brown places fifth at 165
Brown had a busy day, going 6-1 at 165. After a close 2-0 loss in the opening round to Tyler Price (Baker), he rattled off five straight bonus-point wins with two pins, two majors and a tech fall. Due to a new rule limiting the amount of matches in which a wrestler can participate, he was unable to to compete in the consolation semifinals, then took fifth due to a forfeit.

Meet Notes
Noah Robinson took second for the second-straight meet and has now placed in all four tournaments this season. He owns a record of 10-5 in tournament competition in 2017.
• With his six wins on the day, RJ Brown moved into a tie for the team lead in wins with 13. He is now 13-4 on the season and DeVaughn Scott is 13-6.
• Scott has placed in three straight meets this season and increased his career win total to 45, most among active Storm wrestlers.
• Scott has a team-high eight pins in 2017-18, giving him 19 for his career. He finished with four last season and had seven as a freshman.
