Three advance to second day of regional

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- John Gioffredi, DeVaughn Scott and Noah Robinson advanced to the second day of competition to lead the Simpson wrestling team at the NCAA Lower Midwest Regional on Saturday.

Gioffredi (133) and Scott (197) each went 2-0 to advance to the semifinals, where a win in the first match guarantees a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Robinson (184) will have to make his way through the back side of the bracket to advance to Cleveland and needs three wins to place third.

Gioffredi pinned Nebraska Wesleyan's Brayden Dowding in 2:33 in the first match of the day, then cruised to a 10-3 win over North Central's Marc Fleenor in the second match to advance to the semis. He will face Augustana's Brendan Gould in the semis.

Scott met more resistance in his two matches. In the opener, he beat Nebraska Wesleyan's Ben Lodema 7-3. Then he edged North Central's Tyler Vittal 6-5 to advance to take on Loras' Guy Patron in the semis.

Robinson started his day with a 4-0 win over Buena Vista's Kevin Pape. He fell to Augustana's Christos Giastras 6-2 in the quarterfinal, then beat Huntingdon's Cody Dixon 2-0 in the must-win consolation match to close the day. He opens action Sunday against Cornell's Bryce Oveson.

The meet resumes Sunday at 11 a.m. from the Five Flags Center.
