Storm dominate Buena Vista
STORM LAKE, Iowa — The Simpson wrestling team put together a complete performance with five bonus-point wins to beat Buena Vista 38-6 in an Iowa Conference Dual on Friday night.
The Storm won 8 of 9 contested matches on the night, improving to 3-9 overall and 2-4 in the Iowa Conference.
DeVaughn Scott gave Simpson its lone pin, taking down Lane Jellison in 2 minutes, 15 seconds at 197 pounds. Scott has now pinned five opponents in a row and has 18 on the season. He improves to 26-9 overall and 5-1 in the IIAC.
John Gioffredi and Kobey Bosworth earned tech falls at 133 and 174, respectively. Gioffredi beat Michael Owen 16-1 in 3 minutes, 37 seconds to earn his seventh win in a row. Bosworth blanked Andrew Hoffman 16-0 to improve to 12-6.
RJ Brown earned the other contested bonus-point win for the Storm, out-lasting Carson Rhoads 24-11 at 165 pounds.
Jacob Irwin earned a dramatic win at 125 pounds, beating Nate Vento 8-5. Irwin trailed 5-3 in the second period but took a 6-5 lead with a takedown to close the period. He added a takedown in the third to secure the win.
Alek Ziegler built an 8-0 lead on Jack Kyle at 141 pounds and held on for the 9-5 decision. Noah Robinson got four big nearfall points in the second period of his 184-pound match en-route to an 8-3 win over Kevin Pape. Sam Mathis closed the night with a 6-0 decision over Don Phillips at 285, getting all six points after a takedown in the final two minutes.
