Storm led by eight placewinners at Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Led by third-place finishes by Alek Ziegler, Zach Johnston, Kobey Bosworth and DeVaughn Scott, eight wrestlers reached the podium for Simpson at the Coe Invitational on Saturday.

Jacob Irwin added a fourth-place finish at 125, RJ Brown (174) and Noah Robinson (184) came in fifth and Blake Bauer (149) took sixth to round out the Storm's placewinners.

Ziegler (133) outscored Cartland Allen (Graceland) 14-10 in his opening match before losing a decision to Coe's Amier Khamis. He came back with an emphatic 20-2 tech fall win over Devin Stortz (Cornell) in the third-place match.

Johnston (141) started the tournament with a 16-4 major decision over Jake Wulf (Cornell) before falling to Brady Ruden 13-8 in the semifinal round. He secured third place by injury default.

Bosworth (174) had a big day, going 3-1 to take third place for the second week in a row. He opened the day with a 17-8 major decision over Robert Noga (Coe) and followed with a 13-7 win over Zach Wagenhoffer (North Iowa Area CC). A loss in the semifinal put Bosworth in the consolation final where he pinned Jake Mattson (Missouri Baptist) in 2:22.

Scott (197) had a pair of pins, going 3-1 on the day. He pinned his first two opponents, taking down Jordan Challis (Coe) in 5:26 in the opening round and pinning Trevor Trende (Cornell) in 4:44 in the second round. After a loss in the semifinal, Scott responded with a close 5-4 triumph over Artie Bess (Grand View) in the consolation championship.
