Storm fall in A-R-C opener at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa -- The Simpson men's tennis team opened up American Rivers Conference play on Saturday, but lost 8-1 at Wartburg. Following the conference match, the Storm picked up a 6-3 triumph over St. Ambrose.

Match One
Wartburg 8, Simpson 1

Matt Turnley was the bright sport for Simpson against the Knights at No. 4 singles. He cruised to 6-2, 6-5 wins over Grant Kincaid.

Peter Walkwitz narrowly grabbed the victory at No. 5 singles, but fell 6-4, 7-5. Karson Richardson tallied a 6-0 defeat in his first set, but came back strong to almost force a third set, but lost 7-5 in the second.

Brett Dewerff fought hard at No. 3 singles and won five games, but was overpowered. He lost 6-1, 6-4 in his match.

Match Two
Simpson 6, St. Ambrose 3

The Storm bounced back strong in their final match of the day to defeat the Fighting Bees. At No. 1 singles, Zach Reiter won 6-0, 6-2.

Turnley and Walkwitz both lost only five sets in their wins for Simpson in singles play. Dewerff jumped out to a 6-3 advantage in No. 3 singles action. Bradley Wheeler fought back and took the second set. Dewerff held strong and took a 10-6 victory to claim the match.

Nelson and Reiter were the lone doubles duo to win for the Storm. The tandem tallied an 8-2 score.
