Simpson drops A-R-C battle at Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Simpson College was back on the hardwood for the second time in three days on Saturday, but could not maintain an early lead to drop an 84-64 contest at Coe.

After garnering an early 2-0 lead, the Storm (0-4, 0-2 A-R-C) managed to keep the game within two, but the Kohawks (1-1, 1-1 A-R-C) embarked on a 15-5 run to push the game to 24-10.

A layup by junior Chris Honz ignited a 12-2 spurt, which was aided by junior Deontei Johnson draining two triples to help clinch his season-high 11 points during the American Rivers Conference clash. Coe managed to stop the run with a 5-0 scoring spree to close the half with a 44-29 advantage.

Sophomores Collin Lister and Andrew Curran, along with Honz, teamed up for a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to seven right out of halftime. Coe's offense produced a 5-0 scoring spree to halt the momentum and never looked back. The Kohawks shot 48.6% in the second stanza to help secure their first win this season.

Overall, Coe made 51.6% of its shots, compared to Simpson's 35.5% shooting clip. The Storm produced a perfect percentage at the free throw line to help the cause.

Along with Johnson, Curran (16) and Lister (13) both scored in double figures. Honz grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team.
