Simpson falls to unbeaten Dubuque at home

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson College men's basketball held Dubuque to its lowest scoring output of the season on Saturday, but the effort was not enough as the Storm lost 84-65 to the Spartans.

Dubuque used five double-figure scorers to move to 4-0 while the Storm are now 0-2 after competing at home for the first time this season.

Sophomore Andrew Curran led the team with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and dished out a team-high three assists. Junior Chris Honz tallied 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks to fill the stat sheet.

Both teams shot nearly even from the field, but the visitors held a slight edge at 47.4%, compared to Simpson's 43.4% output. The Storm connected on eight triples as the Spartans drained six in the nonconference clash.

In the first four minutes of play, Dubuque rallied for an 8-2 lead as the Storm missed four shots during that span. Simpson regrouped to bring the game to 12-11 in two minutes after a 3-pointer by senior Kade Tatkenhorst capped a 7-2 run. Curran made a jumper to put the Storm out in front at 13-12 with 13:36 to go in the half.

The visitors then went on a 5-0 scoring spree to claim the lead for the final time to hang on. A basket by junior Deontei Johnson cut the deficit to four with 2:29 to go in the first, but Dubuque produced a 7-0 run to end the half with a 38-27 tilt.

In the second frame, both teams shot 50% from behind the arc. Curran led the team with eight points in the last 20 minutes of play, while freshman Tyler Johnson had six and senior Sam Schlegel tallied five.
