INDIANOLA, Iowa - Sarah Fathallah scored the go-ahead goal late in the second half and Coe avoided an upset, beating a scrappy Simpson women's soccer team 2-1 on Friday.
Looking for their first win of the conference season, the Storm (3-12, 0-5 Iowa Conference) put Coe under on a Mackenzie Stump goal in the 66th minute. Kate Morford started the attack, firing an attempt off the crossbar that Stump rebounded and tapped in to give Simpson a 1-0 lead.
Keira Frederito came up with the equalizer less than six minutes later for the Kohawks (14-1-1, 4-1), who came into the game receiving votes in the latest NSCAA Coaches' Poll. She scored from eight yards out on a through-ball played by Kelsey Fauser.
Fathallah scored the winner on a cross from Ashlyn Moos in the 79th minute.
After getting outshot 8-1 in the first half, Simpson - which played its best all-around game of the season - held an 8-4 edge in the second half. Zoe Seiler made four saves in goal for the Storm and MJ Winterer had four for Coe.
Stump took a game-high four shots, putting three on frame.
