WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - The Simpson women's basketball team nearly erased a seven-point deficit in the final 90 seconds but UW-Platteville held on for a 55-52 win at the JustAgame Holiday Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Simpson trailed 53-46 before buckets by Morgan Terpstra and Maddie Muhlenbruck cut the lead to 53-50 with 51 seconds left. Terpstra got a steal on the next possession and made a pair of free throws to make it 53-52 with 26 seconds left.
Simpson couldn't capitalize in its final two possessions and Stacy Clark made a pair of free throws with 5 seconds left to make the final tally.
Muhlenbruck misfired on the potential game-tying 3-pointer as time expired.
Clark scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Pioneers (7-4), who won their third game in a row.
Muhlenbruck scored 11 points for the Storm (5-5). Markayla Mahr and Brooke Panzer added eight points apiece.
Simpson closes play at the Wisconsin Dells on Sunday when it faces UW-Oshkosh.
