Storm fall to Rockford in final weekend match

FULTON, Missouri – The Storm concluded their weekend quad tournament with a match against Rockford on Saturday afternoon. Simpson fell to Rockford in four sets, but many members of the team had solid performances to contribute.

Ignacio Aguado Herranz led the team in kills with 12, followed closely by Anthony Potratz with 8 kills. Hector Lopez Navarro led the team in assists with 21 and Sebastian Rivera took care of the dig category with 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Storm started on the back end of a 6-0 run to open the match before getting the point back on a service error. Sebastian Rivera's service ace and Anthony Potratz' kill brought the Storm back within three points early on. Some mid set runs by Rockford put the Storm down 22-12 late in the set, and Simpson fell 25-14 in set one.
  • Simpson fell to four straight points in the opening of set two, but the team was able to bring the score back to a tie with back-to-back kills by Herranz. The Storm went up by as many as six points at 14-8 in the set. Rockford brought the game back to a tie at 22-22, but an ace by Daniel Garcia Contreras gave the Storm their edge. Simpson won set two 25-23.
  • Anthony Potratz scored the first point for the Storm in set three with a kill. After some back and forth, the teams ended up in a tie at 9-9. Four consecutive points by Rockford set the Storm back a bit, but the Storm were able to bring the score back within two at 15-13. The Storm fell in set three 25-22.
  • The Storm jumped to an early 4-3 lead in set four until Rockford responded with a 4-0 run. A kill by Sebastian Rivera brought the score back within a point, but a series of runs put the Storm down five points. Anthony Potratz put down two aces in a row to bring the score back within three, but Rockford responded. The Storm fell in set four 25-22.

The Storm will take a week off from competition and will return to play at home against Ottawa University of Kansas on March 27th at 6:00 p.m.
