Storm fall in five to William Penn fueled by Aguado Herranz's 29 kills

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Led by Ignacio Aguado Herranz's 29 kills, the Simpson men's volleyball team went the distance against William Penn, falling in the final set 15-12 on Thursday night.

Taking 60 swings on the night, the Storm's (0-6) offense almost exclusively went through sophomore outside as Aguado Herranz finished with a .350 kill percentage. Aguado Herranz also collected 12 digs for the double-double along with one service ace for a total of 30 points.

Adriano Roma added another 18 kills on 47 swings with seven digs, and Max Robinson hit the 50-assist mark along with 10 digs for his double-double. As a team, Simpson collected 60 kills on 147 attempts for a .252 percentage, including six aces, and 10 blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Simpson jumped out to the early 8-3 on kills from Aguado Herranz and Cody Durbin. William Penn battled back to eventually take a 15-14 lead before Simpson rallied down the stretch and capitalized on errors to take the opening set 25-18.
  • The second set went back-and-forth with neither side finding an edge with the score knotted at 17-17. William Penn found their rhythm down the stretch and knocked off Simpson 25-22.
  • The third set went nearly the same way as the second, with both teams locked in with an 18-17 score before William Penn ended the set on a 7-1 run to take a 2-1 set advantage.
  • Simpson responded with force in the fourth set, taking an early 12-7 lead on back-to-back kills from Aguado Herranz. William Penn managed to trim the lead down to just two in the late stages, but Simpson closed out the set on another kill from Aguado Herranz to force a fifth and final set.
  • In the finale, both teams fought evenly with the score tied at 8-8 until William Penn surged for a 7-3 run to close out the match.
