Men's soccer runs away from Buena Vista in second half

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Marcus Varnum scored two goals and the Simpson men's soccer team scored four in the second half en route to a 6-0 shutout against Buena Vista on Saturday.

Varnum scored the first two goals of the second half – the first in the 72nd minute and the second in the 75th – on assists by Mitchell White.

White also scored a goal of his own, opening the scoring in the 14th minute on an assist by Tyler Neumann. The goal is White's 10th of the season, matching his total from each of the last two years in just 11 games.

A junior, White now has 30 career goals, one of just five players in Simpson history to reach the mark. He is tied for third on Simpson's career list and is just six shy of tying the school record set by Angel Salcido from 2002-05.

Neumann finished with two assists, Anthony Ashbridge also had two and Kyle Kusy, Collin Hemann and Connor Nightingale all scored goals for the Storm (8-1-2, 2-1 Iowa Conference).

The Beavers (3-8, 0-3) managed just five shots on the night, putting one on goal. Luke Aronow saved the one shot on goal, as he went 75-plus minutes to combine with Austin Schafer for the shutout.

Simpson gets back on the pitch Monday, Oct. 7 when it travels to Rock Island, Ill. for a non-conference meeting with Augustana.
