Storm split with Cornell on Senior Day

INDIANOLA - Bryn Johnson pitched four scoreless innings of relief for 10-5 Simpson win in game one, but Rebekah Ozga hit two homers for a 9-0 Cornell win in the nightcap, as the two teams split Saturday's doubleheader at Simpson Softball Complex.

Hillary Harmon (Liberty, Mo.) and Carissa Coopman (Davenport, Iowa) each homered for the Storm (22-14, 8-6 Iowa Conference) in game one, and Tieryn Potratz (Fort Dodge, Iowa) opened up a one-run game with a bases-clearing double in the third.

Johnson (Laurens, Iowa) came on in relief of Arey in the fourth, allowing one run in the frame after entering with a runner on second and no outs. She ran into trouble in the sixth inning, but got out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a fly-out to preserve Simpson's 8-5 lead.

Veronica Roshek (Urbandale, Iowa) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Johnson (4-4) allowed four hits and struck out two.

Nicole Duncan drove in a run for the Rams (23-9, 6-6) in the first inning and home runs by Sam Tonelli and Ozga made the score 4-1 after 1 1/2 innings.

Cornell pitcher Jill Trzaska walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the second before Roshek singled to center. The ball was mishandled by the centerfielder, allowing three runs to score. Roshek scored one batter later on a base hit by Keri Sorensen (Bettendorf, Iowa).

The Cornell offense got hot and stayed hot in the nightcap, out-hitting Simpson 14-3. Ozga went deep twice, collected four hits and drove in five runs as the Rams beat Simpson for the second time in series history and first time since 2008.

Amanda Engel (5-3) walked one and struck out four in the complete-game shutout.

Allison Barloon (Altoona, Iowa) couldn't slow down Cornell's bats, allowing three runs off six hits in two innings. Coopman, Roshek and Katie Lambert (Gowrie, Iowa) were the only Simpson players to record a hit.

Between games, Simpson recognized seniors Amanda Enochs (Des Moines, Iowa), Allie Hock (Lawrence, Kan.), Johnson and Kiersten Ruff (Council Bluffs, Iowa).

Simpson closes the regular season Saturday, April 30 when it travels to Decorah to face No. 11 Luther in doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
