Men’s tennis drops first league match
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Simpson men's tennis team dropped two road duals on Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, losing to Wheaton and Coe.
The Storm fall to 1-5 in the spring season after losing 9-0 to the Thunder and 9-0 to the Kohawks. The loss to Coe is Simpson's first American Rivers Conference blemish of the slate.
Match One
Wheaton 9, SImpson 0
Wheaton swept Simpson in both the singles and doubles matches, allowing the Storm to only win four games in one set once. Aaron Price almost forced a third set, but fell 6-1, 6-4 to Jacob Panjwani at No. 4 singles. Matt Turnley also tallied three games against his opponent, but lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, Peter Walkwitz and Turnley were the closest to victory for the Storm. The duo scored two points against their Thunder matchup, losing 8-2.
Match Two
Coe 9, Simpson 0
Simpson failed to win a match against its conference foe on Saturday. In singles, Caleb Vasconez tallied the most game wins with five, but fell, 6-2, 6-3.
The Kohawks swept doubles play without losing a game to the Storm.
Up Next
Simpson looks to return to the win column next weekend as the squad has three matches in two days. Competition begins on Friday against Fontbonne and then follows with matches against Principia and Webster on Saturday in Elsah, Ill.
