Simpson strikes early in 2-1 triumph against Central

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson College men's soccer used a two-goal first half to hold on to win 2-1 against Central inside Buxton Stadium on Wednesday.

Junior Andrew Russell drew a hard foul inside the box to warrant a penalty kick in the sixth minute. Classmate Jordy Triana-Vasquez was tasked with the PK attempt but had his initial shot ricochet off the left post and the keeper. With the ball swirling in front of the net, Triana-Vasquez sprinted to tap it in for the early 1-0 tilt for his seventh netter.

In the 28th minute, Russell found the back of the net for the game-winner for the Storm (4-4-1, 2-0-0 A-R-C). Triana-Vasquez sent a cross into the box to allow Russell to leave his feet and dive forward for the header to hand the Dutch (2-7-0, 0-2-0 A-R-C) their fourth-straight defeat.

After going shotless in the first half, Central made the most of its first chance with a goal in the 47th minute. Gabe Wilson clubbed a corner kick to a jumping Cole Manuel for the header on the team's first shot attempt of the contest.

Triana-Vasquez came inches away from his second goal of the night in the 63rd minute. After beating the goalie in a one-on-one, he was unable to get enough power on the shot and a Central defender slid in to kick the ball out of harm's way.

The offense ended with 14 shots while the defense only surrendered four in Simpson's third one-goal victory this season.
