145 take part in 5K Balloon Challenge

INDIANOLA, Iowa - A field of 145 runners and walkers helped kick off the 2011 National Balloon Classic in the 5K Balloon Challenge Road Race on Friday, July 29.

The runners enjoyed a break from the heat that blanketed Central Iowa throughout the week, as the thermostat read 81 degrees when the race began at 7 p.m.

All participants received a t-shirt with their registration. Those who pre-registered also received a one-day pass to the National Balloon Classic.

Julius Rotich of West Des Moines won the men's open, finishing in 15 minutes, 40 seconds. Brett Carter of Indianola came in second (15:08) and Wick Cummingham of Knoxville took third (17:08). Emily Eimers of Lone Rock won the women's open in 19:04, followed by Jenna Dengler of Ankeny in second (21:58) and Janell Kallenback of Norwalk in third.

Awards were also given to the top three finishers in each age division.
