Storm take fifth at IIAC Championship

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Simpson women's tennis team avenged a regular season loss to Central with a 5-2 win in the fifth-place match at the Iowa Conference Championship on Saturday.

The sixth-seeded Storm (8-7) dropped a 5-1 decision to Cornell in Friday's first round match, pitting them against Central in Saturday's fifth-place match.

Against Central, the Storm got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles before securing three wins in singles to take the match.

"I was very happy with the way the girls played against Central," head coach Lindsay Chase said. "We were the underdog according to the seedings but we believed in ourselves as a team."

Two of Simpson's three wins went to the third set. Mikayla Struebing beat Emily Swartz at No. 1, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) and Tiffany Bost outlasted Ashlei Bos at No. 3, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).

The team of Struebing and Lauren Schemmel beat Bos and Riley Taylor 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Lindsay Nash and Lynae Gruber beat Sarah Montgomery and Jordan Langer 9-8 (7-2) at No. 3.

"This was a great way to end the fall season," Chase said. "The team really supported each other and rooted each other on."

Simpson will take part in the Iowa Conference Individual Tournament next weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
