Simpson battles Coe in home finale

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Coe for their home finale on Saturday at the Indianola Y.M.C.A.

The Kohawks won both sides of the dual as the Storm women fell 97-79 and the men were outscored 118-27.

Kate Minette led the women with two first-place finishes on the day, contributing 18 points individually to the team's score. She narrowly missed a new personal record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.75 and won the 100 freestyle in 57.69. Minette also anchored the 200 freestyle relay that took first by almost 20 seconds.

Breana Hinson took a second off her career-best in the 500 freestyle to place first and went a personal best in the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay. She was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay that won gold.

Keelin Curley celebrated her return from injury with the team's third fastest 200 freestyle race of the season while also swimming the first leg of the 200 freestyle and medley relays. Maggie Steinbeck won the 200 individual medley in 2:35.22 and Katelyn Smith completed the 1000 freestyle in 12:06.34 to round out the women's top placements.

On the men's side, Jay Ceperley swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.63 to place first and Nathan Parkins set a new personal best in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.38.

"I thought we had a really great meet today," said head coach Adam Cvetich. "Bre had a really good day all around with a couple of her fastest times of the season in our relays, and it was awesome to have Keelin back in the water post-injury. Overall, this was a solid "brush-up" performance and it was awesome to see everyone transfer their practice habits into their races ahead of the A-R-C Invitational, our biggest competition of the season."

The Storm have a week off before returning to the pool on Feb. 9 for the first day of the American Rivers Conference Invitational taking place in Decorah.
