Five records broken by Storm swimmers at Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa – Five school records were broken by the Simpson College men's and women's swimming and diving teams at the Pioneer Classic hosted by Grinnell over the weekend.

Alyssa Harris broke two individual records and was a member of all three relay teams that set new program-bests. Keelin Curley, Caroline Oberg, and Kate Minette were each a part of two record-breaking teams, while Breana Hinson, Katie Oosterhuis, and Katelyn Smith all played roles as well.

The women's team compiled 354 team points to place fifth in the field of 11 teams and the men's team collected 13.5 team points to finish eighth. In total, Simpson had eight top-5 finishes, 17 top-15 and 25 top-20 finishes between the men's and women's squads.

The Storm's highest placing at the event came in the women's 100-yard individual medley as Harris completed the race in 1:03.32 to place second and break her own school record set during her sophomore campaign by almost four seconds.

Harris also swam a program-best in the 100-yard butterfly thanks to a 1:01.31 race that edged Kayla Cary's record set in February 2017 (1:01.69). The senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa was less than a second away from breaking a third individual mark in the 200-yard individual medley.

Along with Harris' individual records, the women's team broke both the 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relay records as well as the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Curley, Oberg, Harris and Minette swam the 400-yard freestyle relay less half a second faster than the Simpson's 2016 team and the foursome of Harris, Hinson, Smith and Curley improved the program's best mark in the 800-yard freestyle relay by nearly six seconds. Harris, Oberg, Oosterhuis and Minette clocked a 1:56.71 in the 200-yard medley relay, besting the 1:57.15 school record from 2016.

Minette was less than half a second away from breaking a 17-year old record in the 50-yard freestyle, and Hinson swam the program's third-best 100-yard individual medley race behind Harris' top-two marks. Jay Ceperley swam the third-best 500-yard freestyle in program history and the fourth-best 100-yard butterfly to account for 13 team points.

The Storm will return to the pool next semester when Simpson heads back to Grinnell for the Grinnell Invitational on Jan. 21-22.
