Storm roll to 5-0 win over Bethel

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Spencer Young scored two goals and the Simpson men's soccer team controlled every facet the game in beating Bethel 5-0 on Monday at Buxton Stadium.

Darius Doswell scored one goal and assisted on two more for the Storm (2-0), who have outscored their opponents 8-1 on the young season. Tanner Alderson and Justin Gilmour also found the back of the net in the route.

Simpson outshot Bethel 16-6 on the day, including 9-1 in the first half.

Jake Potratz and Simon Van Den Abbeele combined for the shutout in goal. The Storm's back line held the Royals (1-1) to just two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Potratz.

Alderson started the scoring when he went far post on a feed from Doswell in the 25th minute. Young scored the first of his two goals in the 40th minute, taking a cross from Trevor Fuccio to give Simpson a 2-0 lead at the break.

Simpson's attack continued to pressure Bethel's back line in the final 90 minutes. Doswell scored on a helper from Alderson in the 54th minute then assisted Justin Gilmour on his first goal of the season in the 59th minute. Young closed the scoring with 51 seconds left, taking a pass from Collin Nikolai.

Tanner Alderson scored his 28th career goal to move into a tie for eighth on Simpson's all-time list.
• With the win in goal, Jake Potratz improved to 15-3-1 during his short career. He is now tied for fifth on the Storm's career list.
• Simpson is unbeaten in its last 14 non-conference games dating back to 2016, improving to 13-0-1 during the stretch.
• The Storm improve to 14-5-1 all-time against Bethel and are undefeated in the last seven meetings.

Simpson travels to Moorhead, Minn. next Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8-9. The Storm will face Wis.-Superior on Saturday before closing the weekend against Concordia-Moorhead Sunday.
