Storm lose heartbreaker to Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa -- In an American Rivers Conference slugfest, Jack Palen's goal late in the second half stood up as the game winner and Wartburg beat the Simpson men's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday night.

Palen scored the lone goal of the game off a cross from Michael Hegelheimer in the 81st minute, the lone blemish on Jake Potratz's sheet.

The Storm are now 10-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the American Rivers Conference. Wartburg is 9-6-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the league.

Simpson held an 11-10 advantage in the shot column while Wartburg held a slim 7-6 lead in shots on goal. Tanner Alderson put three shots on frame for the Storm and Jack Arndt had two.

Potratz made six saves between the posts.

UP NEXT

Simpson hosts Coe on Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the final game of the regular season. Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Buxton Stadium.

TOURNAMENT TALK

Simpson is out of contention for the American Rivers Conference regular season crown, but can still host a tournament game. Depending on Tuesday's results, the Storm could finish as high as the No. 3 seed or as low as the No. 5 seed.
