Simpson falls to fourth-ranked Loras

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson men's soccer team hung with one of the best teams in the nation for 45 minutes, but Loras rattled off six goals in the second half for a 7-0 win on Saturday.

Kevin Cavers scored the first goal of the game and assisted on the next two for the No. 4 Duhawks (16-1-1, 6-0 Iowa Conference), who extended their winning streak to nine games.

The Storm (11-7-1, 2-3-1) held their own in the first half, challenging Loras and holding it to only six shots.

"I thought we were able to absorb most of their pressure for the first 45 minutes," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "Unfortunately, we made a couple of crucial mistakes in the second half that led to goals, the third of which was a back-breaker."

The "back-breaking" goal game courtesy of Johnny Rummelhart at the 56:54 mark. Cavers sent a cross into the box which deflected off of goalkeeper Luke Aronow, resulting in a relatively easy score.

"I hope we can use this loss as motivation to improve moving forward," Isaacson said. "We clearly have a lot of work to do if we're to have any chance at making a run in the conference tournament."

Marcus Varnum put Simpson's lone shot on goal in the game, giving Dylan Milkent one save in the shutout. Loras held a 12-1 shots advantage in the second half.

Simpson closes the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 23 when it travels to Storm Lake, Iowa for a meeting with Buena Vista. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
