Missed opportunities cost Storm in overtime loss

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson got out to a 2-0 lead but surrendered three goals in the second half and overtime in a 3-2 men's soccer loss to Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday.

Simpson out-shot Nebraska Wesleyan 20-13 and put six more shots on goal in the loss, its second straight. A number of quality chances went inches wide or high of the mark in the second half.

"I felt as though we controlled the match, but soccer can be an unforgiving sport," head coach Rick Isaacson said after the game. "Simply put, we failed to capitalize on several quality scoring chances and Nebraska Wesleyan was the more opportunistic side tonight."

Kyle Jisa scored the golden goal at the 94:52 mark, capping a string of three unanswered goals by the Prairie Wolves (2-2-1). Colby Twist scored the first goal in the 63rd minute and assisted on Zach Lind's equalizer in the 85th.

"This one should sting," Isaacson said. "To concede a two-goal lead is a tough pill to swallow, especially at home. We've got to learn from this experience and move forward."

The Storm (4-2) dominated the first half and the early moments of the second. Mark Lahart made the score 1-0 with a near-post offering from the top of the box in the 31st minute, part of a first half in which Simpson out-shot Nebraska Wesleyan 10-3.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Tyler Nuemann gave Simpson what appeared to be a comfortable advantage with a great shot off a set piece. Neumann – who leads the team with five goals – set up just outside the box on the left wing and beat goalkeeper Turner Mead to the far 90, making the score 2-0.

Mead went the distance between the posts, making nine saves. Zach McEntee made two saves in the first half for Simpson before Luke Aronow minded the net for the final 49:52.

Simpson had given up only one goal in its previous five contests.

Simpson travels to Hendrix, Ark. this weekend for the Warrior Classic, hosted by Hendrix College. The Storm play the hosts at 6 p.m. on Friday and close against Texas-Tyler at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Hendrix is 4-0-1 on the year while Texas-Tyler is 2-1.
