Big inning, solid pitching leads Simpson past Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Trey Castile and Zach Hollingsworth combined for 17 strikeouts, Ty Cowley and Keaton DeKock drove in three runs each, and the Simpson College baseball team got back on track with a 9-3 win over Coe on Friday evening.

The victory snapped Simpson's seven-game losing skid in the series and marks the Storm's first home win over the Kohawks since the 2013 season.

Castile and Hollingsworth each posted career-high strikeout totals while limiting the Kohawks (13-11, 8-5 A-R-C) to just four hits and one earned run. Castile gave up two hits and struck out 10 over the first six innings and Hollingsworth followed with seven more strikeouts including five consecutive between the eighth and ninth en route to his third save of the year.

Offensively, the Storm (12-13, 3-8 A-R-C) were led by DeKock who was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Cowley who finished with two hits and a trio of RBIs. Bennett Wadstrom drove in two runs and scored once, and Kaleb Bauer was 2-for-3 with one run scored.

After Coe scored once in the second and fourth, Simpson took the lead for good with a big five-run inning. A double by Luke Willis put two runners in scoring position for Matthew Marquez who plated Simpson's first run with a base hit through the right side. DeKock kept the scoring going with a two-run single and Wadstrom and Cowley added RBIs before the inning was through.

Simpson scored a pair of insurance runs in the sixth and seventh thanks to a two-run double from Cowley, a single from DeKock and a sacrifice fly from Wadstrom.
