Five-run seventh dooms Simpson in loss to Buena Vista
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Buena Vista used a five-run seventh inning and strong relief pitching to eke out a 6-5 win over the Simpson College baseball team on Friday evening.
Caden Mathewson roped a two-run triple down the right field line to tie the game at 5-5 after the Beavers (13-8, 5-2 A-R-C) chipped away at the Storm's lead by scoring on a balk and a single from Joel Garcia with two outs. Buena Vista took the lead on another single, and relief pitchers Brayden Polzien and Calvin Harris shut Simpson (11-10, 2-5 A-R-C) down the rest of the way.
Luke Willis plated two runs for the second-straight game to lead the Storm. He singled to shortstop to score Chris Miller in the first inning and gave Simpson a 4-1 lead with an RBI groundout in the fourth.
Trey Castile gave Simpson a solid start on the mound, allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work. He struck out six and walked three in the no-decision.
