#StormTop10 Moments No. 10: Baseball walks off twice / Wrestling beats BV on last-second pin
We kick off our second #StormTop10 list of the summer with a tie for the No. 10 top moment between baseball's walk-off wins over Loras and Central and the wrestling team's dramatic, last-match pin to beat Buena Vista in the Black Box.
Baseball walks off twice: Though the wins and the losses didn't pan out the way the Simpson baseball team would have hoped in 2017, the Storm enjoyed a pair of dramatic, walk-off wins in front of the home crowd.
The first came in a 10-9 win against Loras on March 26. Trailing 9-4 going into the eighth inning, the Storm made it 9-8 after a four-run eighth. Simpson was down to its last out in the ninth before Adam Richman walked and scored the tying run on a triple by Trent Dooley. Pinch-hitter Trey Kehoe hit a chopper that was misplayed by the Duhawk second baseman, allowing Dooley to score the game-winner.
Kehoe was at the plate in the Storm's second walk-off win as well, a 4-3 win in the season finale against Central. With the score tied 3-3 going into the ninth, pinch-hitter Jared Herzog led off the frame with a single and moved to third on a base hit by Jonathan Greiner. Kehoe worked a full count before lifting a fly ball to left, allowing Herzog to come home on the sacrifice.
Wrestling beats BV on last-second pin: In the wrestling version of a walk-off win, Colby Vlieger pinned Buena Vista's Anthony Ossman in the final match of the night to give the Storm a dramatic 23-21 win Friday, Feb. 3 in a raucous Black Box Theater.
The Storm trailed 18-8 with four matches to go, getting technical fall victories by RJ Brown at 174 and Noah Robinson at 184. A close loss at 197 left the Storm down 21-17 going into Vlieger's match at 285.
The senior made quick work of Ossman, getting a takedown in the opening seconds. He got Ossman to his back again and stuck the pin at 2:13, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Jason Clark picked up a crucial decision at 157, getting an escape in the final 15 seconds to beat Brad Kerkhoff 6-4.
